DECEMBER 19TH
Ryan was cooking a lasagne in the microwave. He stood next to it, poised to turn it off before the loud ping sounded to announce it was ready. Heâd already pulled all the curtains shut and turned off all the lights. The room was now lit solely by the glow from his computer monitors and the temporary light from the microwave. Heâd turned his phone to vibrate only, and put his computer on mute in case he accidentally clicked on a video that started playing automatically.
He could feel the tension in his neck and shoulders. It had even made him lose his appetite. His usual pile of daily snacks had sat untouched, and it was only because he had been feeling a bit lightheaded that heâd decided to put the lasagne in.
Addie had been up, knocking on the door several times already. Ryan had ignored him every time, but he knew he wasnât going to give up. If they knew he was definitely in, he might find the door wasnât as good a barrier to entry as he hoped.
He was already thinking through a plan B, should they break and enter. Last night, heâd slept on the sofa to make sure he heard any attempts to get through the door. Today, heâd rigged up cameras around the sitting room. If he pressed a certain button on his phone, then they would start transmitting live to both Harrison and DS Jack Salter. Should Addie and his mates decide to kidnap him, then theyâd know who they needed to find in order to track him down. If it went totally pear-shaped and they ended up killing him for doing a runner years ago, then heâd want to be damned sure that Jack and Harrison would be able to lock them up for it.
Heâd also spent the afternoon creating home-made defences. A kitchen knife bound onto a wooden spoon, to give him more reach. A bottle of bleach decanted into a washing up liquid bottle and slightly diluted so that it squirted out with force. He would not go down without a fight, even if it did mean ruining the rented flat carpets. Heâd worry about losing his deposit and having to pay for some new ones another time.
When he was positive that Addie had left the building, he fortified the door with some extra home made locks. Heâd had to improvise with what he had. His pride and joy was a bracket, straightened, and then screwed into the door frame and door. If he had a fire in the flat, he was going to get toasted. It would take him at least ten minutes to get out.
Ryan knew that he couldnât stay locked in the flat like this for long. Heâd run out of food for one thing, and Addie was eventually bound to lose patience and smash the door down. He just hoped that he could ignore them long enough for Harrison to come back to London. Heâd sorted them out the first time.
